To me first-gen means more than just being the first generation to go to graduate school. It also represents the hard work of our parents and the success of what they hoped to achieve. For many first-gen students, our parents are immigrants who left their home country looking for a better life for their future children. Being first-gen shows that their sacrifice was worth it. We represent the will of our parents and are the manifestation of their dreams. Our presence in higher education also shows what people can achieve even if they come from less than optimal backgrounds. Being first-gen to me means dedication and hard work.
